How is the bent over row performed?
The lifter stands holding a bar, hinges forward at the hips so the torso is somewhere between horizontal and about forty-five degrees, and lets the bar hang at arm’s length with a slight bend in the knees. The bar is pulled toward the lower chest or upper abdomen by driving the elbows back, then lowered under control to straight arms. The torso holds its angle for the whole set rather than rising and falling with the bar.
What does the bent over row train?
The bent over row is the primary barbell measure of horizontal pulling strength, training the lats, mid back and rear deltoids, while the hamstrings and spinal erectors work isometrically to hold the hinged position. That double demand is what distinguishes it from a supported or machine row: the position itself is part of the work.
