Sled Leg Press

The sled leg press is a machine movement in which the lifter sits or lies in a fixed seat and pushes a loaded carriage away along an inclined track using the legs.

Also called Leg Press. orcatrain matches these names when you search the movement catalogue.

How is the sled leg press performed?

The lifter sits back against the machine’s pad with both feet flat on the platform about shoulder width apart, releases the safety catches, and lowers the carriage by bending the hips and knees until the knees approach the chest. The legs then press the platform away until they are almost straight, stopping short of locking the knees out. The back and hips stay in contact with the seat throughout, so the machine carries the balance and the legs do the work.

What does the sled leg press train?

The sled leg press trains the quadriceps and glutes with a heavy load while removing almost all of the balance and trunk demand of a squat. That makes it possible to load the legs hard without the bar sitting on the back, which is its main use as a squat accessory — but it is also why a leg press number is not comparable to a squat number and does not substitute for one.

How does orcatrain score the sled leg press?

Log the weight on the machine as it is displayed. Note that leg press sleds are often angled and many carry an unloaded carriage weight, so the number you log is a machine reading rather than an absolute load — it is a consistent basis for tracking your own progress over time, not a figure to compare against a different machine. Leg press is scored on its own and is not part of the headline total.

Every scored set is turned into an estimated one-rep max, and that estimate is scored with the DOTS coefficient against your bodyweight and sex — so a set is comparable with your own past work and with lifters of a different size. Sets above ten repetitions are recorded but not scored: the estimate is a curve fit that stops being honest past that point, so orcatrain returns nothing rather than a confident guess. Weights are stored in kilograms.
